March Madness is here! I usually don’t follow every game, but I couldn’t resist making a cute basketball cupcake topper. My husband has a bracket and money on the line, so the games have been on a lot at our house. I don’t know all the ins and outs of brackets—I mostly cheer for the teams he picked {probably at random} and groan at the others. What I do understand is cupcakes: soft, sweet, and always worth celebrating. When I’m unsure about something, I improvise with food. It’s what I know and love, and it goes perfectly with a game day atmosphere.

To make these simple toppers, I used orange melting wafers and piped lines with melted almond bark to create a basketball look. I decorated one batch in New Mexico State colors since my child went to school there—an indulgent nod, even though they’re out of the tournament. Chocolate frosting could be used for the lines, but melted almond bark sets firmer, making it easier to place the toppers on cupcakes. As usual, one idea leads to another: the same technique works with white wafers for baseballs, volleyballs, or soccer balls, and you could mix designs for a spirited sports-themed cake or party.

Basketball Cupcake Toppers

24 toppers
Ingredients
- 24 orange melting wafers (Wilton brand works well)
- 1 cube almond bark, melted
- 1 decorating bag or small Ziploc bag
Instructions
-
Place the orange wafers flat side down on a cookie sheet. Spoon the melted almond bark into a decorating bag or a small Ziploc bag and snip off a very small corner so the opening is tiny.
-
Pipe a line down the center of each wafer. Add a curved half circle on each side of that center line. Finally, draw the cross lines perpendicular through the middle of the half circles to complete the basketball pattern. Let the almond bark harden, then place the toppers on frosted cupcakes or a cake.
