A quick Starbucks tidbit

Starbucks introduced the Eggnog Latte in 1986 and it has become a holiday staple. Availability may vary by location, which makes a homemade version even more appealing.

How to make this eggnog latte

Directions:

  1. Prepare a shot of espresso or brew 1/4 cup of very strong coffee. Keep it hot while you warm the milk and eggnog.
  2. Combine the refrigerated eggnog and the milk in a microwave-safe measuring cup or mason jar. Heat for about 45 seconds, then check and heat another 20–30 seconds if needed until steaming hot.
  3. If using a mason jar, close the lid and shake vigorously for 15–30 seconds to create froth. Alternatively, use a milk frother or steam wand if you have one.
  4. Pour the hot espresso or coffee into a mug, then pour the warmed eggnog-milk mixture over it. No stirring required.
  5. Top with whipped cream if desired and sprinkle a pinch of ground nutmeg on top. Even without whipped cream, a dusting of nutmeg finishes the drink beautifully.

Tips and variations

  • Adjust the eggnog-to-milk ratio to taste — more eggnog for richness, more milk for a lighter latte.
  • Use decaf coffee if you prefer an evening treat without the caffeine.
  • Add a splash of rum, brandy, or bourbon for an adult version.
  • Garnish with a cinnamon stick or a dusting of ground cinnamon in addition to nutmeg for extra aroma.
