We created one of the simplest and most satisfying grilled mushroom recipes you can make at home.
These skewered mushrooms were made with white button mushrooms, but you can use any variety you prefer—cremini, baby bella, or even small portobellos cut into pieces. Grilled mushrooms develop a smoky, caramelized exterior and a tender, juicy interior, making them an ideal side dish or a flavorful main for a light meal.

White mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) are among the most commonly eaten mushrooms in the United States. They are low in calories and provide a modest amount of protein along with several important nutrients, including vitamin D and B vitamins when exposed to light. Grilling enhances their natural savory taste and brings out pleasant umami notes.
For this recipe, we brushed the mushrooms with a simple, savory glaze made from olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and soy sauce (or a soy-free alternative). The coating adds color, richness, and a subtle tang that complements the mild mushroom flavor. If you prefer a sweeter glaze, a little sugar-free barbecue sauce can be used to create a sticky, caramelized finish.
Before grilling, be sure to soak any wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes so they won’t burn on the grill. Clean and thoroughly dry the mushrooms, trim the stems if they are too long, then thread them onto skewers so they cook evenly. Baste them with the glaze during grilling to build flavor and shine.
If you avoid soy, swap the soy sauce for liquid aminos or coconut aminos—both offer a similar salty, savory profile. This versatile recipe works well as part of a keto-friendly barbecue menu, a vegetarian main, or a hearty accompaniment to grilled meats and salads.
BBQ Grilled Mushrooms Recipe Ingredients
- 18 ounces white or button mushrooms (or your preferred variety)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce (or liquid aminos or coconut aminos)
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon steak seasoning (or a blend of salt and pepper)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon pink salt (or regular salt to taste)
- 4–6 wooden BBQ skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes before use
BBQ Grilled Mushrooms Recipe Instructions
- Rinse and dry the mushrooms. Trim the stems if they are overly long so the mushrooms sit flat on the skewer.
- Thread the mushrooms onto soaked skewers, placing about four mushrooms per skewer and leaving approximately 3-inch handles at each end for easy turning.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, soy sauce (or alternative), balsamic vinegar, steak seasoning, smoked paprika, and salt. Use a brush or spoon to coat the mushrooms thoroughly on all sides.
- Preheat the grill to medium-high. Place the skewers on the grill and cook for about 8–10 minutes per side, turning once, until the mushrooms are fork-tender and nicely charred. Brush with additional glaze while grilling if desired.
- Remove the skewers from the grill and transfer to a serving platter. Optionally garnish with chopped fresh parsley or a squeeze of lemon for brightness. Serve immediately.
