I was excited when Ohio Beef invited me to prepare steak in the air fryer for Valentine’s Day. There’s a lot to love about this dish: it looks elegant on the plate, takes about 20 minutes to prepare, and is surprisingly simple to make. Topping the steaks with a creamy shrimp sauce elevates the meal, turning a straightforward steak dinner into a special occasion entrée that still fits a busy evening.

Why Air Fry Steak?

An air fryer delivers high heat and constant air circulation, which helps produce a nicely seared exterior while keeping the interior tender and juicy. I used petite sirloin steaks for their balance of marbling and leanness—flavorful without the higher cost of premium cuts like filet mignon. Choosing sirloin made it easier to pair the beef with a rich shrimp cream sauce without pushing the meal over budget.

Ohio Beef for Valentine’s Day

Beef makes a classic centerpiece for a Valentine’s Day dinner. Lean cuts of beef can be part of a heart-healthy diet, especially during American Heart Month in February. Research supports that lean beef, enjoyed as part of a balanced diet, can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Consider including lean beef in heart-healthy recipes this month and beyond.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Steak

White and rosé wines complement beef dishes nicely; a dry Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp pairing with these steaks and the creamy shrimp sauce. Classic side dishes such as mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli are simple, satisfying complements that let the steak and sauce shine. Finish the meal with a rich dessert like a chocolate lava cake for a memorable end to a romantic dinner.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 2 — 6 oz petite sirloin steaks
  • 1/2 tsp salt (divided)
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 12 medium shrimp, peeled, deveined, tails removed, raw
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp fresh chives, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt (remaining)

Start Cooking

Instructions

  • Remove the steaks from the refrigerator and let them warm for about 20 minutes. Season both sides evenly with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (about 5 minutes).
  • Place the steaks in the air fryer basket and cook 6 minutes. Flip and cook another 6 minutes. Check the internal temperature and remove when it reaches 145°F for medium doneness.
  • While the steaks cook, make the shrimp cream sauce.
  • Melt the butter in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook about 2 minutes until they begin to turn pink, stirring frequently. Add the garlic and cook about 1 more minute until fragrant.
  • Add the white wine and heavy cream, bring to a simmer, then stir in the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and the chopped chives. Remove from heat.
  • Serve the steaks topped with the warm shrimp cream sauce.
