Meal Plan Tips

These tips are meant to reduce prep time and food waste by using leftovers and making smart swaps.

  • The meatloaf recipe calls for ½ pound Italian sausage; buy 1 pound and reserve the extra ½ pound for Friday’s lasagna if you like. The lasagna also works well with less meat or none at all.
  • Use red potatoes for the parsley potatoes on Sunday and the roasted red potatoes on Wednesday to simplify shopping and prep.
  • No special recipe needed for grilled cheese—simply butter the bread, add your favorite cheese, and toast over medium heat. Serve with tomato soup and save leftovers for lunch.
  • This plan features sweet potatoes in several dishes. Consider baking extra sweet potatoes to use in breakfasts like waffles and oatmeal, or substitute canned pumpkin puree when needed.
  • On Tuesday, double the sweet potato taco filling to use for burritos or lunches later in the week. Add leftover Spanish rice for a tasty filling.
  • Friday’s lasagna uses no-boil noodles for quick assembly. Pre-cooking noodles isn’t required and adding leftover Italian sausage makes it even easier.
