Every chip deserves a great dip. Make a quick, gluten-free version of classic French Onion Chip Dip in under five minutes—simple, tasty, and perfect for parties or snacks.

This dip is a memory-food for me: the simple packet-of-soup-mix-and-sour-cream version my mom used to make. That Lipton mix was delicious, but it isn’t gluten-free. Instead of hunting down store-bought gluten-free mixes (and reading long ingredient lists), I developed a homemade blend using pantry spices and sour cream so you can control the ingredients and avoid unnecessary additives.
This homemade French onion chip dip is fast to put together, tastes like the classic, and keeps your snack table free of questionable ingredients. It’s ideal when you don’t want to run to the store or when you prefer to make things from scratch.
Serve it at a cookout, during the Super Bowl, for a casual lunch, or whenever chips are on the menu. It also pairs well with hearty sandwiches and game-day fare.
Dried Spices and Sour Cream
This recipe uses dried spices from your pantry combined with sour cream for a fast, no-cook approach. You won’t be caramelizing onions—this is the quick method that still delivers great flavor and mimics the onion-soup-mix taste without gluten.

- Dried minced onion: small flakes (sometimes labeled onion flakes or chopped onions) — not onion powder. Find them in the spice aisle.
- Onion powder: adds concentrated onion flavor.
- Dried parsley: for a touch of color and mild herb note.
- Sugar: just a pinch to balance flavors.
- Kosher salt & black pepper
- Sour cream: the creamy base.
Together these dried ingredients recreate a gluten-free onion soup mix flavor that works wonderfully in a dip. While I wouldn’t necessarily use this mix for making soup, it makes an excellent chip dip.
Stir it up!
Combine the dried spices with sour cream, chill to let the flavors hydrate, and you’re ready to serve. It’s that easy.

Mix everything together, then refrigerate at least 30 minutes so the dried onions soften and the flavors meld. Stir again before serving.

Serve with your favorite chips and enjoy. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to one week—give the dip a quick stir before serving.
