Homemade Biscuit Donuts: Quick Recipe for Crispy, Fluffy Donuts

My sister-in-law taught me this simple biscuit donut method when we spent a weekend at the cabin, and I make them when we go camping too. They’re quick to fry, easy to coat in cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar using a paper bag, and cleanup is minimal.

Ingredients

Scale

  • Canola or vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cans large buttermilk biscuits

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 inches of oil in a large, heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix the sugar and ground cinnamon and set aside for coating.
  3. Place the biscuits on a cutting board and use a 1½-inch round cutter to remove the center from each biscuit to form the donut shape.
  4. Fry the donuts in batches until golden on one side, then flip with tongs to brown the other side. Fry the cut centers to make donut holes.
  5. Drain the fried donuts on paper towels, then toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture (or powdered sugar) while still warm.

Notes

Adapted from a classic biscuit donut recipe. These are best eaten the same day while warm and crisp. For easy coating and minimal mess, place the sugar mixture in a paper bag, add a few donuts at a time, and shake gently to coat.
