We have a lot of art supplies, pencils, and pens for our kids and the various DIY projects we enjoy. If you’re like me and always looking for smart ways to store crafty items, this DIY pen holder is a perfect solution.

These clay holders are great for organizing stationery on kids’ desks or at a homework station. This air-dry clay project is simple, fast, and a tidy way to keep creative spaces organized.

Supplies You Will Need:

  • Air-dry clay — any brand will do; Crayola is a good option
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutter or a small round object (cup) for the base
  • Sponge
  • Ruler
  • Patterned clay roller
  • Acrylic paint (white was used here)
  • Paintbrush
  • Gloss sealer (such as Mod Podge)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Clay

Knead the clay thoroughly, then shape it into a smooth ball so it’s easy to roll out.

Step 2: Roll the Clay

Roll the clay with the rolling pin until the slab is about 1/4 inch (7 mm) thick and roughly 8 inches (20.5 cm) long.

Step 3: Cut the Wall

Use a ruler and a needle tool (or a sharp knife) to cut a rectangle for the holder’s wall. For a base diameter of about 3 cm (1.1 in), cut a rectangle about 12 cm (4.7 in) long. Choose the height you prefer for your holder.

Step 4: Add Texture

Roll a patterned clay roller across the slab to add texture. Roll once evenly to avoid smudging or distortion.

Tip: Applying texture before cutting helps preserve clean edges and keeps the shape consistent.

Step 5: Cut the Base

Cut a circular base from the leftover clay using a cookie cutter or small cup. Aim for a base about 3 cm (1.1 in) in diameter. Remember that air-dry clay can shrink slightly (around 5%) as it dries.

Step 6: Form the Cylinder

Wrap the rectangular wall piece around the circular base to form a cylinder. If the clay feels too soft or sticky, let it rest a few minutes to firm up slightly for easier handling.

Step 7: Trim Excess

Trim any excess clay with a needle tool or a butter knife to neaten the edges and base connection.

Step 8: Smooth the Edges

Press the wall edges together and smooth the seam with your fingers. A slightly damp sponge works well to refine joints and smooth surfaces.

Step 9: Paint and Protect

Allow the assembled holder to fully dry, then paint it in your chosen color. Finish with two thin coats of clear gloss sealer to protect the surface and add shine.
