Kid-Friendly Recipes with Step-by-Step Photos

My children and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes and revisiting family favorites. They usually watch me photograph our creations and often enjoy helping. When you’re working with sugar, sprinkles, and colorful ingredients, who wouldn’t want to join in? Stella and Mitch always like to get behind my camera and imitate what I do. So I decided to let them create their own recipe and document it with their own cameras. They each used Fujifilm Instax cameras to assemble a cookie mood board in our kitchen. I’m leaving this adorable mood board up for a while! Today they made what they call “cupcake cookies” — with extra sprinkles. They can’t wait to share the recipe with you.

Plus (hint — hint) I also have a giveaway! Keep reading until the end…..

  • A box of rainbow sprinkle cake mix
  • A can of white or vanilla frosting
  • Extra sprinkles
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil

For this project we used our two Instax Mini 8 instant cameras. The instant prints were perfect for adding to our mood board. The cameras are cute, compact, and easy for kids to use.

The kids took their recipe photos very seriously. They stood on chairs, leaned in close, and concentrated on getting the right shot. I helped them choose recommended camera settings when needed.

Kids Recipe by Photo - How to make Cupcake Cookies

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare a cookie sheet with non-stick spray.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the box of cake mix with 2 eggs and 1/3 cup vegetable oil.
  4. Stir until the batter is smooth.
  5. Drop rounded spoonfuls of batter onto the cookie sheet about 1.5 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 6 minutes — the bottoms of these cookies brown quickly, so keep an eye on them.
  7. Allow the cookies to cool.
  8. Frost the cookies with vanilla frosting.
  9. Top with extra sprinkles.
  10. Enjoy!

They call these Cupcake Cookies because the batter starts with boxed cupcake or cake mix. The results are soft, chewy, and delicious. A dollop of frosting and a shower of sprinkles makes them irresistible. Because the Instax photos printed instantly, we hung them across a chalkboard in our kitchen with twinkle lights and small clothespins. The board now tells their visual story of how to make Cupcake Cookies.

Try making your own kitchen mood board — it’s a fun way to document family recipes and involve the kids in photography and cooking.
